Barcelona and Tokyo deepen cultural and institutional ties with commemorative year

The launch of Catalonia-Japan year signifies a new phase in the relationship between Catalonia and Japan, marking an opportunity to strengthen connections in various sectors while celebrating cultural heritage that both territories share.
The year organized by the Catalan government and the Consulate General of Japan in Barcelona. will feature a diverse range of events in both territories, art, gastronomy, technology, and innovation. The Catalonia-Japan year is not just about cultural exchange. It is also a strategic move to reinforce institutional and economic collaborations.
According to Jaume Duch, Catalan minister of European Union and Foreign Action, strengthening ties with Japan is crucial for Catalonia's long-term global positioning.
''Catalonia must consolidate strategic alliances that offer new opportunities for the future, and the Catalonia-Japan partnership is one of them," he said.
The official kick-off took place this week at Barcelona's Joan Miró Foundation, a museum in the city's area of Montjuïc, where renowned Japanese pianist and composer Mine Kawakami performed a special recital.
At the same time, but across the globe, Tokyo's Metropolitan Art Museum will host an exhibition of the Catalan artist Joan Miró, offering the Japanese audience a broad look at the artist's legacy and global influence.
Beyond the arts, the initiative will also include joint efforts in economic cooperation, research, and technological innovation. Events will include forums on business collaboration, scientific exchange programs, and discussions on sustainability, reflecting Catalonia’s commitment to forging stronger global partnerships.

Catalonia has maintained a close relationship with Japan for years, with most of its culture taking over locals life-styles, such as eating sushi or watching one of the most famous anime Dragon Ball.
Since 2009, the regional government has implemented a Japan plan, which outlines specific strategies to enhance diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations. Additionally, Catalonia established a government delegation in Japan. Further solidifying the bond between the two regions.
