Barcelona (ACN).- The Catalan filmmaker David Victori has won Youtube’s ‘Your Film Festival’ competition with his short movie ‘La Culpa’ (The Guilt). Victori bested 15,000 other candidates and will shoot a project produced by Ridley Scott and featuring Michael Fassbender. The director of Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Prometheus will produce the new project with $500,000, which Victori will direct. The winner of the competition sponsored by Youtube and Emirates was announced last Sunday at Venice’s Biennale Film Festival. This Monday, the Catalan filmmaker disclosed to ACN that he will direct a science-fiction mini-series with four or five short chapters that will be broadcast on Youtube. The Irish-German actor Michael Fassbender (Shame, Hunger, Inglorious Basterds, Jane Eyre and 300) will play the main character, as part of the competition’s award.
Talking about the film with which he won the ‘Your Film Festival’ competition, the Catalan filmmaker said that “Fassbender knew the project very well, he congratulated me, told me he liked it very much and that he was looking forward to start working [on the new project]”. Victori disclosed that the mini-series’ preparation will start very soon. “We will not let many days pass” he said, although “everything is very recent”.
Victori said he was “very surprised” at having won Youtube’s competition over 15,000 other candidates. The Catalan film director told ACN he is very thankful to all the people for having supported his project through the social networks. He explained he thought it was “very unlikely” to reach the finale and win the competition with his short movie, which explores the feelings of revenge when the main character’s wife has been murdered. The shooting was done in Barcelona, with outdoor locations taking place in the Catalan capital’s Poblenou disctrict. Carlus Fàbrega, Mar Ulldemolins, Cesc Gómez and Pol Estadella are the movie’s main actors.
Victori explained he decided to shoot such a story when he read in the newspaper the news about a woman who had her face burnt with acid when she refused to marry a fellow university student. “It shocked me and I was very surprised that the lex talionis was allowing her take vengeance on her aggressor”, said Victori. This story made him think “about what would happen if vengeance was legal”. “Thinking over the issue of vengeance made me be honest with myself and go one step further. If this woman does it, what will happen to her later?” he wondered. “This is why I thought it was interesting to explore this issue and giving it a shape, in this case, the shape of a short movie”, he stated.
The Catalan movie director disclosed he has a “very solid” project in Spain: a movie that currently is looking for funds to start its preparation. Victori will spend a week in Barcelona after Venice but then he will travel to Los Angeles, where he currently lives. The CAA agency of directors, actors and scriptwriters has started to represent Victori.
