Carmen Thyssen Museum in Barcelona to open in 2027
New collection located in Passeig de Gràcia will transform city into 'global art capital' showcasing Catalan art from 19th and 20th centuries
The new Carmen Thyssen Museum in Barcelona will position the city as "one of the world's leading art capitals," said Mayor Jaume Collboni during a press conference on Thursday to unveil the project.
Located on Passeig de Gràcia, the museum is set to open its doors in 2027, according to Jaume Sabater, president of Stoneweg, the private investment fund that acquired the building.
Baroness Thyssen, one of the world's most renowned art collectors, expressed her "emotion" at the creation of a museum in her "beloved Barcelona" and confirmed that works from her private collection would be on display.
The new museum will focus on Catalan art of the 19th and 20th centuries, but will also host temporary exhibitions of works from major international collections.
"We want this museum to energize the city by attracting significant artworks to Barcelona and by elevating the international profile of Catalan art," Collboni stated.
The mayor also emphasized that the museum, located in one of the main tourist areas of the city, will attract "quality tourism."
This private initiative, alongside other city museums and the planned expansions of MACBA and MNAC, will mark a "historic leap" in Barcelona's cultural offering, Collboni said.
The museum will be located in the iconic Comedia cinema, which closed its doors in January this year.
The CEO of Stoneweg said that the reform project of the building is "ambitious" and will require an administrative process for the works license, which has just begun.
While project leaders have not disclosed the cost of the museum, Sabater noted that press estimates of €110 million are "not far off the mark."
The new space will be designed in collaboration between a Catalan architecture study and another international, which have not yet been disclosed.
