Barcelona's iconic furniture store Vinçon brought back to life in DHUB's new exhibition
Display shows 100 IKEA designs that the emblematic store would have been proud to sell
Barcelona's design museum DHUB will host a new exhibition bringing together furniture from IKEA and Barcelona's iconic store Vinçon.
Vinçon was a well-known household goods store in the heart of the city, which closed its doors in 2015 after almost 75 years.
The exhibition pays tribute to the store by comparing it to the Swedish furniture giant, and features 100 IKEA items that Vinçon would have been proud to sell.
Despite their differences, both brands have left a lasting mark on furniture design in recent decades, united by a "shared commitment to good design."
The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the importance of good design and its impact on everyday life.
Running from October 17 to February 23, the exhibition is based on an original concept by Fernando Amat, who owned Vinçon for many years.
The story of Vinçon began in the 1920s as a shop specializing in imported fine china. In 1967, brothers Juan and Fernando Amat took over after the death of their father and transformed the shop into one of Barcelona's most iconic design destinations.
They introduced international design to the city, making Vinçon a pioneering space where design was celebrated as culture long before any institution in the city promoted the concept.
However, after the 2008 financial crisis, with the rise of online shopping and competitive pricing, and the touristification of Passeig de Gràcia, the family decided to close the store in 2015.
With this tribute, Vinçon's legacy will be brought back to life at DHUB, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
