Barcelona's zoo has launched Cuida'ls, a new interactive space designed to raise awareness about biodiversity conservation and the importance of responsible animal care.

After visiting the site, the city's mayor, Jaume Collboni, stated that this initiative is a ''turning point for the zoo of the future'' and a step toward making it ''a space dedicated to defending and promoting biodiversity and the need to preserve species.''

Cuida'ls educates and immerses visitors in the challenges faced by wildlife today while also showcasing conservation efforts. The exhibition uses interactive storytelling and technology, offering an engaging experience for both children and adults.

The 230 square meter installation is divided into three sections. The first section is an immersive room where visitors are introduced to biodiversity and its threats through an audiovisual experience.

Two digital avatars, Alba, a zookeeper, and her otter companion, guide guests on a journey through time, exploring the evolution of ecosystems and the dangers posed by human activities such as poaching, pollution, and habitat destruction.

The second room shifts focus to the real-world conservation challenges and solutions. Digital and interactive displays present cases of illegal wildlife trade and highlight the role of law enforcement agencies, like the role of Catalan Mossos d’Esquadra police in combating animal trafficking.

The exhibit also features replicas of confiscated items and explains the zoo’s role as a recognized rescue center under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The zoo provides a safe haven for animals rescued from illegal trade, contributing to the protection of endangered species.

The final section of Cuida'ls invites visitors to actively participate in conservation efforts. The space provides information about the Barcelona Companion Animal Shelter (CAACB) and ways to support animal welfare initiatives.

From summer 2025, Cuida'ls will expand with additional educational activities. The 2025-2026 academic year will see the introduction of tailored programs for schools, integrating biodiversity topics into the curriculum to foster a new generation of conservationists.

The initiative required an investment of €1.1 million, partially funded by the Spanish government and the EU's Next Generation funds.
