Catalan cinema takes center stage at Goya Awards
'20,000 Species of Bees' leads with 15 nominations, followed by J.A. Bayona's 'Society of the Snow' with 13
The Goya Film Awards, Spain's equivalent of the Oscars, will take place tonight with a strong Catalan presence.
The Catalan co-production '20,000 Species of Bees' by Basque director Estíbaliz Urresola is one of the big favorites to win with 15 nominations.
It is closely followed by J.A. Bayona's 'Society of the Snow', about the 1972 Uruguayan rugby team that survived a plane crash, with 13 nominations.
Jokes & Cigarettes (Saben aquell)' by David Trueba received 11 nominations. The comedy is based on the life and career of the unforgettable comedian Eugenio, played by Catalan David Verdaguer, and is set in Barcelona in the late 60s.
Renowned Spanish filmmaker Víctor Erice also received 11 nominations for his enigmatic tale of a missing actor, 'Close Your Eyes'.
Catalan director Isabel Coixet received 7 nominations for 'Un Amor,' a film based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Sara Mesa, starring Catalan Laia Costa.
The singer and actress Ana Belén, and the directors known as the Javis will be in charge of presenting the Goya 2024 Awards, which will be held tonight in Valladolid.
