Highest number of daily Covid-19 cases recorded since February
2,587 cases were reported on June 28 as contagion among youth raises concerns
The highest number of daily Covid-19 cases since February was recorded on June 28, with a total of 2,587 cases. The number of daily cases had been mostly under 1,000 for the previous 2 months.
Over the last couple of weeks, with the growing prominence of the Delta variant and a staggered relaxation of measures, coronavirus has been spreading more rapidly, especially among young people.
For instance, the outbreak risk and transmission rate have both now been increasing for 10 days after months under control. The outbreak risk stands at 146 on June 24 (over 100 is deemed as high), and the transmission rate stands at 1.35 (over 1 concerns authorities). The transmission rate is the highest it has been since April 16, over two months ago
Cases among young people
Since the majority of young people are not yet vaccinated, it is among this demographic where most new cases are concentrated.
Large outbreaks have been recorded in the last week among students on end-of-course trips, with over 350 Covid positives among students after trips to the Balearic and Canary islands. Almost a further 5,000 persons are in quarantine.
The number of positive cases of students seen in Menorca roughly doubled on Tuesday and the figure now stands at 153.
The Catalan government spokesperson, Patrícia Plaja, said that “The data from the last few days isn’t good. At the moment, we’re not at a point where we need to put the brakes on the relaxation of measures. We’re calling on everyone’s personal responsibility."
