Unemployment continues at low since 2008 with May slight drop
2,692 fewer people out of work compared to April as number of jobs hits new record
Unemployment continued at a low since the 2008 financial crisis in May, when the number of people out of work slightly dropped by 2,692 people.
At the end of last month, 336,103 people had no job, the lowest figure since July 2008, when 321,964 people were looking for work.
According to data published by the Spanish work ministry on Friday, the fifth month of the year ended with 3.71 million workers contributing to social security in Catalonia, the highest level of all-time in any May.
Thus, the economy generated 40,503 jobs in the past month, an increase for the fourth month in a row.
May is usually a month in which unemployment drops – it happened every year since 1996 except for three years.
In Spain as a whole, the trend was the same, with a record 20.8 million workers in May, an all-time high. Meanwhile, those unemployed dropped by 49,260 people in May to hit 2.74 million people out of work, the lowest figure in the fifth month of the year since 2008.
