FGC, the Catalan government-run rail company, enjoyed a record-breaking year in 2024 on its metropolitan services, with a total of 97.4 million journeys made.
The figure represents an increase of 7.2% compared to 2023, and exceeds the previous record by 7%. That was in 2019, the year before the pandemic, when 91 million journeys were made.
The Barcelona-Vallès line saw almost 69 million journeys, an increase of 6% on the previous year, while the Llobregat-Anoia line registered 28.6 million, up 10.2%.
In the west of Catalonia, the Lleida-La Pobla de Segur service recorded almost 450,000 trips, an increase of 19.8% on 2023. As for punctuality, almost 99% of trains arrived on time in 2024 (not delayed more than three minutes).
FGC president Carles Ruiz said the figures were "very good," with growth "on all lines and practically at all stations too."
The date motivates the public company to "continue working every day to offer a reliable, safe and quality public transport option in order to encourage more and more people to leave their cars at home," Ruiz said.
Metro and bus record
A record 684 million journeys were registered by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) in 2024, the company said in a statement on Monday.
The figure is 6% more bus and metre journeys than the previous all-time high, recorded in 2023.
The metro closed the year with a record number of passengers, nearly 469 million. On Sant Jordi's Day, April 23, 1.8 million metro tickets were validated in a single day.
The bus network carried 215 million passengers in 2024, 6% more than the previous year, and almost 2% more than the 211 million passengers recorded in 2019, when the previous record was reached.
