Barcelona airport is expanding its horizons again. On Monday, it inaugurated the first flight operated by Ethiopian Airlines that will connect the Catalan capital with Addis Ababa, making a stopover at Madrid.

Ethiopian Airlines will run four weekly flights throughout the summer up until the end of October. In the morning, the African company touched down on a Catalan runway for the first time, one hour later than scheduled on its official inauguration day.

During the inauguration of the new route, the airline’s general director  Tewolde GebreMariam estimated that there will be around 200 passengers per flight. He also did not rule out the possibility of a direct flight in the coming years, with no stopover in Madrid, if “demand grows.”
