Nearly 5m passengers in Barcelona airport in August
All Catalan airports saw increases in passenger flow compared to previous year, with Barcelona up 11%
The Barcelona Airport saw an 11.4% increase in the number of passengers on commercial flights in August compared to the previous year, according to data published by Spain's airport authority, Aena.
The facility in the Catalan capital saw 4,974,579 passengers come through its doors in August.
Despite the increase compared to last year, it is still 8.1% lower than the same month before the pandemic.
In total, the airport in the Catalan capital has received 33,027,538 passengers since January this year, 23.7% more than the first eight months of 2022, but 7.2% less than the same period in 2019.
The Barcelona El Prat airport had the second highest number of passengers of all airports in Spain, only surpassed by Madrid Barajas airport which had 5,559,790 visitors.
Elsewhere in Catalonia
Another Catalan airport that saw an increase in passengers was the Girona-Costa Brava airport. During the month of August, this airport saw 289,138 passengers, 32.1% more than last year.
Since the beginning of the year, 1,066,836 people arrived at the Girona airport.
Catalonia's third busiest airport, Reus, also saw an increase with a total of 178,651 passengers.
In the first eight months of the year, the Reus airport saw 747,677 passengers, a 12.8% increase in the same period last year.
