Inflation in Spain in September remains high but drops to 9%
Consumer Price Index decreases for second month in a row
Inflation in Spain remains high but it dropped from 10.5% to 9% year-on-year between August and September.
According to preliminary figures released by Spain's National Statistics Institute on Thursday morning, core inflation –not including food and energy– stood at 6.2%, 0.2 percentage points lower than the highest level during this period, registered in August.
A decrease in the price of energy is the main factor that contributed to the drop in the inflation rate. Fuel and transport prices went also down.
The definitive inflation figure will be released in mid-October. If the IPC data is confirmed, the downtrend of prices that started in July will continue. It was before on the seventh month that inflation stood at 10.8% in Spain and 10.3% in Catalonia.
August figure for Catalonia: 10.2%
September figures for September in Catalonia are not available yet, but inflation stood at 10.2% in August, down from 10.3% in July.
This was the second-highest rate in Catalonia since 2002 when records began, and it is primarily driven by the cost of electricity, gas, fuel, and food.
