Experts propose increasing minimum wage to €1,184 per month
Rise between €39 and €50 needs approval of Spanish government
Experts reporting to the Spanish government have recommended increasing the minimum wage between 3.4% and 4.4% this year, reaching the €1,184 monthly gross.
The rise, which would range between €39 and €54, would see the lowest salaries representing 60% of the average income, as set in the European Social Charter treaty.
Spain's minimum wage is currently set at €1,134 monthly gross and paid in 14 different payments.
It recently increased from €735.9 paid in January 2018 to €900 in January 2019 and €1,000 in January 2022. The last increase was recorded on January 1, 2024, when the minimum monthly gross was raised by €54 to the current set wage.
The Spanish labor ministry will now negotiate with the labor and business unions CCOO, UGT, CEOE, and Cepyme. Labor unions had requested an increase of between 5% and 6%, although they also opened the door to negotiating a smaller rise, surpassing 4%.
Spain's minister Yolanda Díaz hopes to see the increase retroactively to January 1, 2025.
Once agreed upon between unions and business groups, the Spanish government will be required to give its green light.
