Catalonia's first-ever commercial delivery drone successfully transports package
It takes pig insemination company 7 minutes to send parcel to farm
A commercial delivery drone successfully transported a package from one place to another in Catalonia for the first time ever on Friday.
This feat, which is also Spain's first, involved a parcel sent by central Catalonia pig insemination company Semen Cardona to a farm.
It is also the first time that a delivery drone is not flown within a pilot's line of sight.
"One of the main advantages is time," Jordi Salvador of the Barcelona Drone Center told the Catalan News Agency.
"Right now, we're at a farm and it took us half an hour to get here while a drone can get here in 7 minutes," he added, explaining that this "reduces the delivery time by almost 75%."
The drone carrying pig semen traveled a 7km distance at 70km/h.
"The science fiction we've seen in movies and novels is coming," Salvador said. "Our job is to do this safely and with costs that are not prohibitive."
