30% more tourists than previous year make Catalonia most popular territory in Spain
Catalonia welcomed 7.9 million visitors during the first six months of 2023, up 30.5% compared to last year.
While the Balearic Islands was the autonomous community that received the most visitors in Spain in June (24.7% of visitors), overall, Catalonia (21.9%) saw a higher number of tourists from January to the end of June.
As the Spanish National Statistics Institute revealed on Wednesday, one out of five travelers to Spain (21%) chose Catalonia as their main destination.
French (14.9%) and Britons (13.8%) were the nationalities with the most travelers.
In June alone, foreign visitors to Catalonia spent €2.17 billion, up 17% on last year's figure.
During the first six months of 2023, Spain welcomed 37.4 million visitors, an increase of 23.7% on 2022.
Across the country, travelers spent €46 billion, 28.3% more than during the same period last year and 14.3% more than in 2019, the last full year before the Covid-19 pandemic started.
