Catalonia welcomed 2,287,846 international tourists in August, an increase of 6.2% compared to the same period last year.

According to provisional data released by the Spanish Statistic Institute (INE), August saw the second most amount of tourists arriving, only behind July.

However, the amount of August visitors is still lower than pre-pandemic levels, when 2,363,331 international tourists came. Thus, 2024’s figures are inferior to that record by 2.88%.

August also represents a 4.66% decrease from the number of this year's July, which saw 2,384,535 visitors come.

Despite this decrease in August, 2024 is still on the path to breaking the record for the most visitors in Catalonia in a year.

During the first eight months of 2024, there have been 13,749,223 international tourists, up 9.74% on 2023 and 0.94% more than the same period in 2019, which is the record year according to the data from the Spanish Statistic Institute.

Out of all of Spain, Catalonia saw the second most tourists in August (20.9%), only surpassed by the Balearic Islands (22.9%) and Andalusia (14.7%).

Catalonia leads the Spanish rankings in the year-to-date figures, however, ahead of the Balearic Islands (11.2 million) and the Canary Islands, which saw almost 10 million international tourists.

Every tourist spent on average €213 per day, and the average stay in Catalonia was 6.3 days.
