Girona airport sees 84% increase in passengers in first five months of year compared to 2023

Barcelona airport handled 4.9 million passengers in May, according to figures released on Wednesday by Aena, the Spanish airport management company.    

This figure represents an increase of 11.5% over the same month last year, making it the seventh consecutive month of record figures.   

Of the nearly 5 million passengers, 3.7 million were international, an increase of 14.4% compared to May 2023, while 1.3 million were domestic, an increase of 4.1%. 

Since the beginning of the year, the airport has recorded 21 million passengers, an increase of 12.8% compared to the same period last year.   

As for airport operations, 31.5 million were managed in May, an increase of 10% over the same month last year.  

Barcelona airport is the second busiest in Spain in terms of passenger traffic, after Madrid's.  

The Spanish capital's airport handled 5.6 million passengers in May, an increase of 12.4% over the same month last year. 

Girona airport nears half a million passengers  

Between January and May this year, Girona-Costa Brava airport in northern Catalonia handled nearly half a million passengers, an increase of 84.7% compared to last year.   

Nearly a quarter of these traveled in May alone, reflecting the surge of the summer season and the increase in routes operated by Ryanair and other airlines such as British Jet2.com.   

Despite the strong numbers, traffic is still slightly below pre-pandemic levels, down 4%.   

In terms of operations, the airport handled 2,390 take-offs and landings in May, an increase of 53.3% compared to the same month in 2023. 

Reus airport passengers up 17.2% 

Reus airport, in southern Catalonia, recorded 161,912 passengers in May, an increase of 17.2% over the same period last year.   

During the first five months of the year, the airport saw a total of 272,123 passengers, an increase of 19.4% over 2023.   

The number of operations increased by 29.9% last month compared to last May, with 2,374 flights.   

Since the beginning of the year, there have been a total of 8,859 takeoffs and landings, an increase of 11.2%.
