August sees record 5.4 million passengers use Barcelona airport

Figures for 2024 are 8.9% up on last year

Barcelona airport has seen a new record number of passengers pass through its doors in August. 

The busy summer month saw 5.41 million passengers, up 8.9% on the same month last year, according to data published on Thursday by Spain's air traffic controller, Aena.

The 2024 figures slightly exceed those of 2019, the last year before the pandemic, by just 4,510 more passengers (+0.08 %).

Adding the numbers for July and August, Barcelona airport saw 10,797,473 travelers in total, 7.2% more than the same period in 2023.

Since the beginning of the year, the airport has seen 36,888,075 passengers land or depart, 11.7% more than the first eight months of 2023 and 3.6% higher than in 2019. 

Girona and Reus

Girona saw a total of 344,306 passengers in August, 19.1% more than a year ago and the highest monthly figure seen since May 2015 (538,996).

Regarding the number of take-offs and landings, Girona airport saw 3,207 operations in August, 17.2% more than last year.

For the year to date, the airport has seen 1,399,975 passengers come through its doors, on more than 16,000 operations.

In southern Catalonia, Reus airport saw 206,763 passengers during August, 15.7% more than the same period in 2023. They arrived or departed in 1,902 flight operations, 11.7% more than last year. 

In the year to date, the facility has seen a total of 869,693 passengers, 16.3% more than in the same months of 2023.
