14% fewer mortgages in Catalonia in January 2024 compared to 2023
Similar declining tendency across Spain, with exception of Aragon and Galicia
A total of 5,858 housing mortgages were contracted in Catalonia in January of 2024.
This is 14.2% - or 972 - less than in January of 2023, according to the latest data published on Tuesday by the Spanish Association of Land and Property Registrars (CORPME).
At the same time, the number of homes sold and purchased increased slightly by 1.6% in the same period, from 8,781 housing units to 8,919.
The trend was the same in Spain, where 13.7% fewer mortgages were taken out in January 2024 compared to the previous.
In contrast to the increase in sales in Catalonia, the total number in Spain declined slightly by 1.8% during the same period.
According to the CORPME report, the only Autonomous Communities that saw positive growth in new property loan deals were Aragon and Galicia, with 2.9% and 9.3%, respectively.
During 2023, the number of new mortgages and real estate sales and purchases fell between 15% and 28%.
