America’s Cup to have long-lasting impact on Barcelona’s harbor
Mayor Jaume Collboni hopes sailing competition will be enjoyed by city residents
Only 29 days before the America's Cup begins in Barcelona, the city's mayor Jaume Collboni officially presented on Tuesday the sport competition.
On the presentation "Everything ready for the America's Cup", Collboni stated how this competition has been an opportunity for the city and the people to "re-connect with the sea."
This is the first time the sporting event is held in an urban harbor, that is why Barcelona's Port Vell has been adapting and transforming to host the team's bases for the competition.
This transformation also aimed to make the event more accessible and available for people and residents.
That is why other areas of the city have also transformed, such as the construction work on La Rambla boulevard near the Port Vell, and the new Olympic harbor that opened on Sunday with more space for blue economy and nautical activities.
During his speech, the mayor also acknowledged how this edition of the America's Cup is innovating by making it more sustainable and available for everyone, as well as more equal, as this will be the first time that women will be competing in their own category.
On the presentation of the sporting competition, America's Cup Event CEO, Grant Dalton, explained how the city will impact the tournament: "The spirit that has been built in Barcelona will have an effect on the America's Cup and it will be preserved throughout the competition."
When speaking about continuing to celebrate the event in the city, Dalton stated: "As team New Zealand we first have to win to stay in the city, but it will be a very brave person that will have to take away the America's Cup from Barcelona."
During some of the regattas, different cultural events will take place around the harbor. In addition, some sailing courses will be available for children to learn more about the sport.
Collboni also mentioned that in a month Barcelona will be a city that has hosted the world's most viewed sporting events: the Olympic Games, held in 1992, the Football World Cup held in Spain in 1982, and this year's America's Cup. In addition, the city will see the 2026 Tour the France kick off.
When will the America's Cup take place?
The preliminary regattas will take place from August 22 to 25, where all six teams will compete to see which are the two fastests.
From August 29 to October 7 the Louis Vuitton Cup will take place, where challenger teams will compete to see who will face the defender Emirates Team New Zealand.
The final of the cup will take place from October 12 to 27, where New Zealand's team will be challenged by the other country that classifies. The team that wins seven regattas will be the new defender of the America's Cup.
UniCredit Youth America's Cup will be held from September 17 to 26, and Puig Women's America's Cup will go from October 5 to 13.
