Unemployment drops for second consecutive term in Catalonia

The 3rd term (July-September) ended with less people unemployed in Catalonia, concretely 6,700 people less. The unemployment rate has decreased 3 decimals and is now 17.41% of the active population. In addition, Catalonia represents half of all the new jobs created in Spain this term, with 34,500 jobs created. It is the first time in the last year that unemployment has dropped for the whole of Spain.

Medical services for Pope Benedict XVI’s visit largest of the year

Emergency Medical Services of Catalonia (SEM) will be equipped with 160 people, 38 ambulances and 4 hospital tents for Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Barcelona. Thousand of people, most of them old, are expected to be on the streets and in the events scheduled. Barcelona is getting ready for the Pope’s visit taking place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of November to bless the Sagrada Família church.

European Commissioner for Energy states that single market with Northern Africa will become reality

Günther Oettinger, European Commissioner for Energy, told CNA that within the next 40 years, a single market with Northern Africa will exist, he “is sure” about it. In addition, Oettinger stated that the main obstacle for a truly effective European energy single market is the lack of key infrastructures. In this sense, he stressed the need to build electric lines through the Pyrenees and the Alps, linking Central and Southern Europe with Northern Africa.

The PP takes Catalonia’s bullfighting ban to the Constitutional Court

The Spanish Conservative People’s Party (PP) finally presented an appeal to the Constitutional Court on the Catalan Parliament’s law banning bullfighting in Catalonia, which was approved 3 months ago. The PP is arguing that the law exceeds Catalan competences and enters into the Spanish State’s competences. The PP also says that the law restricts citizen rights and freedoms.
