Party review: Anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans will do “everything in their hands” to avoid independence

September 22, 2015 04:53 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

Anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans (C’s) is the youngest party with representation in the Catalan parliament. Founded in 2006, their support has increased dramatically in every election and most of the polls forecast that they will be the second force in the upcoming 27-S elections. Their position regarding Catalonia’s independence is open opposition and they call for reform of the Spanish Constitution. “I’ll do everything in my hands to avoid Catalonia’s independence” assured C’s candidate Inés Arrimadas at a press conference held this Tuesday at CNA headquarters. “We don’t want to think of the reactions to a hypothetical victory of pro-independence forces. We want to beat them, we want to win the Catalan elections” she stated. According to Arrimadas, Ciutadans is the only party which understands the real problems of the citizens “and independence is not a priority for them”. “We focus on the services, not on the institutions” she added.

September 22, 2015 04:10 PM | ACN

During the first trimester this year, Catalonia was the leading region in Continental Western Europe in terms of investment, both in total amount of investments attracted and in the amount of jobs generated. This growth is much higher than the Spanish average; foreign investment in Spain in the second trimester of 2015 was only 73% higher than that recorded during the same period last year.

Bank of Spain Governor: Catalonia’s independence may led to “frozen bank accounts”

September 21, 2015 07:37 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

The Bank of Spain Governor, Luis María Linde, stated this Monday that if Catalonia becomes independent there’s a risk of frozen bank accounts, also known as ‘corralito’, and pointed out Greece and Argentina as recent examples. Linde also stated that an independent Catalonia will “automatically” be outside of the Eurozone. President Mas has described the statements as “irresponsible, immoral and indecent” and accused Linde of behaving like “a PP candidate”. Mas accused the Spanish institutions of “intoxicating” Catalan citizens in order to maintain their “status quo and their power”. The Catalan President also denied the possibility of a ‘corralito’, because Spain is not interested in damaging the Catalan economy.

Party Review: Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) is against Catalonia’s independence and declares that “a nation is not a state”

September 21, 2015 02:53 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

The Catalan Socialist Party (PSC), the Catalan branch of Spanish Socialist Party PSOE is against Catalonia’s independence. “I hope and I wish that pro-independence forces won’t get an absolute majority in the upcoming elections” stated Miquel Iceta, a consolidated member of PSC whom has been chosen to run for President in the upcoming 27-S elections. Iceta has come in for the previous candidate, Pere Navarro, whom got the worst result for PSC in any Catalan elections; only 20 seats from the 135 which compose the Catalan Parliament. PSC’s support in Catalonia has decreased dramatically since 2006 and the party has faced many crises and changes in its leadership, both in Catalonia and in Spain. Many parties have attributed this decline to the lack of independence of the PSC and have claimed that their policies are directed by their mother party PSOE.

September 21, 2015 10:44 AM | MICHAEL TOLL

Lionel Messi tallied his first two goals of the season as FC Barcelona ran away from Levante in the second half on Sunday night, winning 4–1 at Camp Nou. Defender Marc Bartra opened the scoring five minutes after the break and was quickly seconded by Neymar. After a Messi penalty kick that seemed to slam the door shut, Levante’s Víctor Casadesús provided his side a brief glimmer of hope before Messi threw away the key with a killer strike in the waning moments. The triumph makes Barça a perfect four-for-four on the season, keeping them at the top of the league table, as well as a perfect eleven-for-eleven all-time versus Levante at Camp Nou in La Liga. Levante remain winless on the season despite snapping a four-game league goalless drought at Camp Nou.

September 18, 2015 07:54 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

The Spanish Bank Association (AEB in Spanish) and the Spanish Confederation of Saving Banks (CECA in Spanish) warned about the “risks” of Catalonia’s independence. In an official announcement made this Friday, both associations assured that all banks with a presence in Catalonia “would face severe problems of judicial insecurity” in the event of a Unilateral Declaration of Independence after the 27-S elections. They outlined that “any political decision which would imply breaking the rules in force” would result in “exclusion from the EU and the Eurozone” for Catalonia. The Catalan Finance Minister, Andreu Mas-Colell, described the Spanish government as “being irresponsible” for pushing the banking sector to be against the independence of Catalonia. He regretted that such “a delicate sector” was used as an “artillery weapon”.

Dombrovskis, former Prime Minister of Latvia and European Commissioner for the Euro and Social Dialogue recalled that the European Commission “does not normally comment on party politics in member states or their regions”. “We are ready to work with democratically elected or appointed authorities of member states”, he emphasised

Brussels insists that an independent Catalonia would remain outside the EU

September 17, 2015 07:24 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

The European Commission reiterated this Thursday that an independent Catalonia would be kept out of the EU and would need to reapply for admission. “If a part of a Member State ceases to be a part of that state” because it becomes independent, “the treaties will no longer apply to that territory”, stated European Commission spokesman, Margaritis Schinas. The new independent state “will become a third country and may apply to become a member of the EU”, he added. Schinas clarified that this statement was not the result of any official analysis of the consequences of Catalonia’s independence and said that the European Commission would only carry out such a study if Spain or another EU Member State requested it.

Catalonia’s fitting into the EU “should not be used as an argument in this referendum campaign”

September 17, 2015 07:04 PM | ACN

The Swedish Parliament’s Committee of European Affairs’ president, Carl Schlyter, stated that the fitting of an independent Catalonia into the EU “should not be used as an argument” nor “an excuse” in Catalonia’s independence debate. According to Schlyter, “Catalonia will for sure fulfil” all the criteria required to be part of the EU and added that “Spain will see the benefits of having good relationships with Catalonia, whatever Catalonia decides”. “Being angry with your neighbours is the worst strategy”, he emphasised. Schlyter made these statements during an event related to the 27-S elections, organised by the Public Diplomacy Council of Catalonia Diplocat, at the Swedish Parliament.
