November 10, 2015 12:37 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

‘Barcelona Catalonia Culture Week’, the first Catalan cultural week organised in Shanghai awoke the interest of 73,000 people. Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Catalan Society ‘Casal Català de Xangai’ and 15 years since the twinning of Barcelona and Shanghai, China’s financial capital hosted more than 30 activities to present Catalonia’s cultural heritage to the local audience. International icons such as surrealist painter Salvador Dalíand architect Antoni Gaudíwere the centre of some of the art exhibitions. Another key point of the programme was the participation of ‘Castellers de Vilafranca’, whom displayed Catalan human towers all around the city. “This initiative introduces Catalonia to China’s collective imagination”stated the Catalan Institute of China’s President, Alexis Roig, and is the result of “a joint effort from civil society, companies and the Catalan institutions”.

Artur Mas: “Freedom is beyond ideologies and parties”

November 9, 2015 07:53 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

A month and a half after the 27-S elections, and using up all the deadlines, the Parliament held this Monday the first session of the instatement debate. So far, the only candidate to lead the new government is Artur Mas, the current President and number four in winning cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’. However, the other pro-independence force in the Parliament, radical left CUP, has repeatedly insisted that they won’t instate Mas as President. Without the support of CUP’s 10 MPs, Mas won’t be re-elected, at least not in the first round. “Freedom is beyond ideologies and parties” he stated during his speech before Parliament. “We must orientate the sails in the correct direction in order to use the wind that we received from the 27-S elections”stated Mas, clearly referring to CUP’s position. “We can’t be stuck in the harbour, not after receiving the support to start the journey”.

The Parliament declares the start of the independence process

November 9, 2015 02:37 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

The Parliament approved this Monday the agreed declaration to start building “an independent Catalan State in the form of a republic”. The proposal, presented by the main pro-independence forces in the Parliament, cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’ and radical left CUP, obtained the support of 72 MPs from the 135 composing the Parliament (the 62 ‘Junts Pel Sí’ MPs and CUP’s 10 MPs). All the other groups, anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans, Catalan Socialist Party PSC, Catalan People’s Party PPC and alternative left coalition ‘Catalunya Sí que es Pot’ voted against the declaration. “The process of democratic disconnection won’t be subject to Spanish institutions’ decisions, particularly those from the Spanish Constitutional Court, which is regarded as discredited and without competences” states the declaration’s text, which also urges the new government to “obey exclusively those mandates produced” by the Parliament.

FC Barcelona v Villarreal CF: Neymar and Suárez sink Yellow Submarine (3–0

November 9, 2015 11:15 AM | MICHAELTOLL

The two halves of Sunday’s game were night and day for FC Barcelona. During the first half the action was set in midfield but after the break there was a much greater assertiveness on attack, especially for Barça. The Catalans scored on the stroke of one hour when Sergio Busquets came up with a loose ball following a Villarreal turnover in their own half and picked out Neymar on the left flank. Suárez made it 2–0 on a penalty kick in the 70th minute. But while FC Barcelona’s first two goals were the epitome of teamwork, the third and final goal of the day was a paragon of the Neymar–Suárez show and a quintessential exhibition of technical ingenuity by Barça’s number 11. By the end of 90 minutes of play, the Yellow Submarine, as Villarreal are known, was little more than a mangled wreck lying at the bottom of the sea floor, courtesy of two-third’s of Barça’s trident, who have performed brilliantly in the absence of Lionel Messi. With the win, the Catalans are now unbeaten in their last 15 games against Villarreal, including seven straight wins at Camp Nou across all competitions.

November 9, 2015 09:45 AM | ACN / Sara Prim

The second edition of Suite Festival, hosted and organised by Barcelona Liceu Opera House, will gather together a wide range of international artists such as Paul Anka, Johnny Hallyday, Michel Camilo and Emir Kusturica amongst others. The aim is to attract new audiences and make the Liceu “more social”, stated its General Director, Roger Guasch. Although the whole programme is still to be confirmed, Suite Festival faces into its second edition organising three more concerts than last year and with a 1.5 million euros budget, 300,000 euros more than in the first edition. The cheapest ticket will cost 15 euros and 180 euros will buy you the most expensive. To promote the opera to new and younger audiences and “break down”the barriers, Guasch assured that Liceu and Clipper, the promotion company of Suite Festival, will compare and mix their databases so that Barcelona Opera House can have as much accurate information on the attendants’profiles as possible.

Another historic 9-N to start building a new country

November 9, 2015 02:02 AM | ACN / Sara Prim

Coinciding with the 1st anniversary of the 9-N symbolic vote on independence, the new Catalan Parliament which has emerged after the 27-S elections will hold one of its most important sessions. Using up all the deadlines, the chamber will have to hold this Monday the first round to elect the new Catalan President and the only candidate presented so far is the current President, Artur Mas. Mas was number four in pro-independence cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’and has always been the winning party’s one and only candidate for President. However, the other pro-independence force in the Parliament, radical left CUP, has repeatedly insisted that they won’t instate Mas as President. Without the support of CUP’s 10 MPs, Mas won’t be elected, at least not in the first round. The election of the new President won’t be the only decisive point on the Parliament’s agenda this Monday. Earlier in the day, the chamber will have to vote on the agreed pro-independence proposal presented by ‘Junts Pel Sí’and CUP. The declaration sets out the key points and the schedule to commence “the disconnection process”from Spain and start building a new independent state.

Council of Europe receives 1.5 million signatures supporting Catalonia’s independence

November 6, 2015 08:58 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

The main pro-independences civil associations, the Catalan National Assembly (ANC), Òmnium Cultural and the Association of Municipalities for Independence (AMI) handed over 1.5 million signatures supporting Catalonia’s independence to the Council of Europe. The signatures were gathered during the non-binding referendum that took place on the 9th of November 2014. The pro-independence civil associations’representatives travelled to Strasbourg to denounce “the lack of democratic will of the Spanish State”and they reported on Catalonia’s situation to a delegation of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly. The delivery of these signatures is the first international diplomatic action promoted by the ANC, Òmnium and the AMI. “The Catalan case is present in the European agenda”stated the ANC’s president, Jordi Sànchez, and added that “giving first-hand information from civil society is very important”.

Switzerland will only mediate between Catalonia and Spain “if all the parts explicitly request it”

November 6, 2015 03:34 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

The Swiss executive will only mediate between Catalonia and Spain “if all the parts explicity request it”. This was the answer of the Swiss government to the question posed by Swiss MPs from several parties whom asked what would be Switzerland’s role regarding Catalonia’s push for independence. “Considering Switzerland’s neutrality and democratic tradition would the Federal Council propose our country’s good manners to ensure mediation between Madrid and Barcelona?” Swiss MPs asked their executive on the 22nd of September. The answer of the Swiss government reflected that “Catalonia’s pro-independence aspirations affect Spain’s internal politics”and therefore “the possibility of a Swiss intervention isn’t planned”. The Catalan Foreign Affairs Secretary, Roger Albinyana, celebrated the Swiss proposition as “it is the first international actor”to highlight the “lack of dialogue”of the Spanish government.

The Parliament’s President, Carme Forcadell, announced this Friday that her candidate for President of the Catalan Government will be Artur Mas. After holding meetings with all the parliamentarian groups, Forcadell confirmed that current President and the number four of pro-independence cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’ is the candidate whom has majoritarian support. Mas has been the one and only candidate proposed by ‘Junts Pel Sí’. However, the other pro-independence force in the Parliament, CUP, have repeatedly insisted that they won’t instate Mas as President. In her appearance before the media, Forcadell also announced the Parliament’s schedule for next Monday, with the vote on the pro-independence declaration taking place in the morning and the instatement debate scheduled for the evening.

November 5, 2015 07:33 PM | ACN

The exhibition looks at the relationship between the Catalan painter, symbol of the surrealism movement, and the press. The show aims to highlight that Dalínot only published several articles in newspapers but went much further: he designed advertisements and illustrated some of his own and other colleagues’texts. ‘Dalíand Media’includes 250 pieces, most of them newspapers, magazines and printed advertisements but there are also 30 objects from Dalí’s workshop, 12 paintings and 2 original drawings. This is not the first exhibition based on the surrealist artist to be held in Shanghai. In February 2011, the Gala-Salvador Dalífoundation also organised in China’s financial capital the retrospective ‘Dalí: a genius of the XX century’. ‘Dalíand Media’has already been to other cities such as Moscow, and will be displayed in Shanghai’s Chi K11 Art Space until the 15th of February.

Spanish Constitutional Court gives the green light to vote on pro-independence proposal

November 5, 2015 07:29 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

The Spanish Constitutional Court (TC) will in the end allow the plenary session to put the pro-independence declaration to vote. The TC hasn’t adopted the precautionary measures that the PPC and Ciutadans asked for in order to stop the debate on the ‘Junts Pel Sí’ and CUP agreed proposal and will allow the plenary session to vote on the roadmap towards independence proposed by ‘Junts Pel Sí’ and CUP. They pointed out that precautionary measures are only adopted in “cases of extreme urgency” and that they understand that this is not the case. However, the TC accepted the three writs of protection presented by the Catalan People’s Party, PPC, the Catalan Socialist Party, PSC, and anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans. The magistrates expressed this Thursday in a joint letter that the appeals have been accepted because they “transcend the concrete case” and “raise judicial matters of a relevant social repercussion, with political consequences”. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy assured that if the pro-independence proposal is ultimately approved, the executive itself will appeal.

Victory over BATE edges FC Barcelona closer to last 16 (3-0)

November 5, 2015 10:49 AM | DAVID GLADWELL

Neymar (2) and Luis Suárez provide the goals for a win over the Belarusians that mean the blaugranes now just need a point to top and group and make it to knock out stages. On the quarter of an hour mark Ivan Rakitic limped off with a calf injury and Munir was the man chosen to replace the Croatian. The substitute played a key role in the goal that put the blaugranes ahead on the half hour mark, forcing a penalty that Neymar turned into the first goal. Suárez broke the offside trap down the right hand side and his unselfish pass took out keeper Chernik and allowed his Brazilian team mate to slide the ball into an empty net for his second and Barça’s third of the evening. That was job done for the home side and although Suárez and Neymar himself seemed determined to add to their personal tallies, it ended 3-0 to the blaugranes.

PPC, PSC and Ciutadans take pro-independence roadmap before the Court

November 4, 2015 06:45 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

Catalonia’s People’s Party (PPC), Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) and anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans asked the Spanish Constitutional Court (TC) to stop the processing of ‘Junts Pel Sí’ and CUP’s agreed declaration to start the independence process. Xavier García Albiol, from PPC, Inés Arrimadas, leader of Ciutadans in Catalonia and Miquel Iceta from PSC all appeared this Wednesday at the TC’s registration office but each presented their own writ of protection. They are calling for the TC to cancel the Parliament Bureau’s decision to pass the processing of the pro-independence declaration and put it to vote next Monday. The three petitions point to a possible violation of the citizens’ right of participation and that of the parliamentary representatives, as the Spokesperson Bureau was convened before PPC constituted themselves as a parliamentary group. The TC may now hold an extraordinary plenary session to respond to these petitions before Monday, when the Parliament is scheduled to put the pro-independence declaration to vote.

Catalonia promotes its gastronomy and wine at 'World Travel Market'

November 4, 2015 03:58 PM | ACN / Sara Prim

Catalonia promoted itself as a leading tourist destination at London World Travel Market, one of the most important global events for the travel industry. This year, Catalonia’s strategy focused on its selection as European Region of Gastronomy 2016, so that routes based on local food and wine have been designed to add value to Catalonia’s traditional attractions. “We must appreciate the gastronomic richness of our country” stated Delegate of the Catalan Government to the UK, Josep Manuel Suárez, who highlighted the Mediterranean diet as “fundamental”. Throughout the week, Catalonia’s stand will offer to the 50,000 visitors expected to attend the fair an image of the territory that goes beyond sun and beaches, promoting the Pyrenees region and cities with a relevant Roman heritage such as Tarragona. The aim is to diversify Catalonia’s tourism and to become a city break destination as well.

Match Preview: FC Barcelona v BATE Borisov

November 4, 2015 11:16 AM | DAVID GLADWELL

Barça face BATE Borisov this Wednesday at Camp Nou at 8.45pm CET in the knowledge that a win against the side from Belarus could put them through to the knock out stages for the 12th season in a row should AS Roma fail to beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the other Group E fixture. The Belarusians are currently in third place in the group on 3 points, one behind second placed Bayer and so still have hope of making it to the last 16 themselves. Luis Enrique is focused on just one objective for side at Camp Nou: "The goal is to qualify, and do it as first in the group. The groups are competitive, and anything can happen. But as the defending champions we must send a message that we are ready.” Javier Mascherano will be available even though he is currently one match into a two game domestic ban in La Liga, and Andrés Iniesta, recently recovered from injury, should be in the squad as well.
