The suspension of the Catalan Ministry for Foreign Affairs is “going to work against the aim of the Madrid government” and boost independence support, according to some foreign MEPs that have been following the political process in Catalonia. “It was just a kind of name change, not a legal change, but it has big emotional meaning for both sides”, said former Foreign Affairs Minister of Lithuania and now MEP Algirdas Saudargas. The President of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and also MEP Ian Hudghton said Scots are “fortunate” not to have “been treated in the way that Madrid seeks to treat Catalonia”. Flemish MEP Mark Demesmaeker argued that there is a “big contrast” between Spain and Belgium, while the Swedish Green MEP Bodil Valero defined as “very strange” the decision by the Spanish Constitutional Court to suspend the Catalan ministry.

Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) and anti-Catalan nationalism ‘Ciutadans’ have agreed to form “a reformist and progressive” government. The 66-page document, which both parties signed this Wednesday, includes the commitment to oppose “any attempt to hold a referendum with the objective of launching the auto-determination of any territory in Spain”, in clear reference to Catalonia’s push for independence. The document also aims to launch, during the first month of the term of office, an ‘express reform’ of the Spanish Constitution and start writing a new project at the beginning of 2017. Thus, ‘Ciutadans’ will support PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez’s investiture in the upcoming debate, which will take place on the 1^st of March. However, together both parties have only 130 seats, far from the 176 required to invest Sánchez in the first round.

According to Jordi Llonch, the CEO and creator of Sharing Academy, the idea for the app came from a personal struggle with one of his classes. A record figure of 100,000 visitors are expected and 2,100 international exhibitors have confirmed their attendance at the fair, consolidating Barcelona as a true meeting point for the sector. The 2016 edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) will take place amid major security measures due to the terrorist attacks in Paris last November and will also be affected by the metro strike, whichTransports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will carry out on the key days of the MWC. Thus, the recently opened new metro line, the L9, won’t contribute as much mobility as expected.

The Spanish executive will use declarations from several members of the Catalan government as proof of alleged unfulfilment of Spanish Constitutional Court (TC) decisions. According to the Spanish government’s acting vice president, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, such declarations constitute “acknowledgment on their part” and will be added to Spain’s allegations in cases such as the recent suspension of the Catalan Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In this particular case, the Spanish executive will also use the letter published earlier this week which the Catalan Minister for Foreign Affairs, former MEP Raül Romeva, wrote to the European Parliament’s President, Martin Schulz,. Romeva asked for Schulz’s support “in facing the formidable challenges ahead and the task with which our citizens have democratically entrusted us”.

The European Free Alliance (EFA) has strongly criticised the Spanish Constitutional Court’s decision to suspend the Catalan Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In a press communiqué released this Friday under the title ‘Spain’s attack on Catalan democracy’, EFA’s President, François Alfonsi, lamented the “disturbing anti-democratic trend in Spain that runs contrary to European values”. In the same vein, the President of EFA’s Euro parliamentary group, Catalan MEP Josep Maria Terricabras, noted that “the office of Foreign Minister is recognised in law and in Catalonia's statute of autonomy” and urged Spain to respect “democratic governance and human rights”. The EFA isthe group in the European Parliament which gathers together Catalan left-wing pro-independence ERC and other nationalist parties of the EU.

The Catalan chamber wished to pay tribute to pro-independence cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’ MP Muriel Casals, who passed away on Sunday. Casals was president of the civil association promoting Catalan language and culture Òmnium Cultural and was regarded as a central figure of the pro-independence movement in Catalonia. The institutional event gathered together representatives from all the authorities in Catalonia and combined protocol speeches with live music and poetry. Catalan President, Carles Puigdemont, stated that the best way to honour Casals’ memory will be by “fulfilling her dream” and said that “the new country will also carry her name”. “We will keep on working for our dream, sadder, but firm as a rock”, stated the Parliament’s President, Carme Forcadell, who was, together with Casals, one of the main people responsible for the pro-independence massive rallies which have taken place in Barcelona for the past six years.

Hotels around Barcelona are starting to fill as the city prepares to host the 11^th edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) from the 22^nd to the 25^th of February at the Gran Via venue of the Fira de Barcelona. With between 95,000 to 100,000 visitors expected to attend, the highest number ever for the MWC, Barcelona’s Hotel Association expects to reach full occupancy on the peak days. Although the average rate for a room has gone down from €278 to €237 per night this year, some hotel rooms in central areas like Passeig de Gracia report rooms going for as much as €800 to €1,100 per night. Although the event blocked 26,300 rooms for the event with the city’s hotel association, the high demand for rooms in Barcelona has pushed some participants to look outside the city for rooms in Sitges, Castelldefels and even as far as Girona. 

Catalonia sold abroad some €63,839 million worth of goods and services in 2015, setting a new record. This figure represents a 6.1% increase in comparison to the level of exports registered in 2014, according to information released by the Spanish Ministry for the Economy and Competitiveness. Imports into Catalonia reached €76 billion in 2015, which represents a 5.8% increase on figures from the same period in 2014. This means that Catalonia's trade balance registered a deficit of €12.1985 billion, a 4% reduction on the deficit for 2014. Catalonia continues to lead the exports ranking in Spain and accounts for 25.5% of all Spanish goods and services sold abroad, followed by the Valencian Community (11.4%) and Madrid (11.3%).The chemical sector was the sector which contributed the most to Catalonia's exports, representing 27% of the total for 2015 and reaching €8,497.5 million.

Gijón is the town where Barça’s coach Luis Enrique grew up and Sporting is a club that shall forever be close to his heart. “Whenever I go back to El Molinón, it's special” he said on Tuesday. “But tomorrow I'm going back as a coach and I want to win” he stated. The Barça boss and Sporting’s coach, Abelardo Fernández have known each other since school, and the latter also spent part of his playing career at FC Barcelona.

The Spanish Constitutional Court (TC) has accepted the appeal presented by the Spanish executive to suspend the new Catalan Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Thus, the department lead by pro-independence cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’ top member, Raül Romeva will be suspended at first for five months, which is the period that the TC has to study whether the new Ministry is in line with the Spanish Constitution. Earlier this month, the current Spanish vice president, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, and current Spanish Minister for Justice, Rafael Catalá claimed that the Catalan government had exceeded the competences in matters of foreign action specified in the Catalan Statute of Autonomy. For his part, the Catalan President Carles Puigdemont assured that Catalonia “will continue to do foreign action”and defended the legitimacy of the new department. 

The Catalan government has decided to recognise Muriel Casals, one of the Catalan pro-independence movement’s central figures, who died last Sunday, with the Gold Medal of the Generalitat. The award is the highest prize given to those individuals or institutions whose work in the political, social, economic, cultural or scientific field has been outstanding. President of the civil society association Òmnium Cultural between 2010 and 2015, Casals was responsible for the massive pro-independence rallies which have taken to the streets of Barcelona for the past six years. In 2015, she joined pro-independence cross-party list 'Junts Pel Sí' and ran for the 27-S Catalan Elections. Recently, she was named president of the Study Committee for the Constitutive Process, responsible for setting the basis for Catalonia's roadmap towards independence.

The first European date on ‘The River Tour 2016’ will be in Barcelona. The Boss will visit the Catalan capital on the 14^th of May to commemorate the 35^th anniversary of the release of his album ‘The River’ with a concert at Camp Nou. ‘The River Tour 2016’ started in Pittsburgh on the 16^th of January and The Boss performed the whole album, one of his most iconic works. Together with the E Street Band, Springsteen will offer two other shows in Spain; one in San Sebastian and the other in Madrid. Tickets for the Barcelona show will go on sale on the 1^st of March, with prices ranging from 80 euros to 115 euros for reserved seats. The last time The Boss visited Barcelona was in 2012, when he offered a double show during ‘The Wrecking ball’ tour.
