Three of the biggest trade unions in Catalonia, USTEC, Intersindical, and CGT, have called for a strike in the education sector on September 6, coinciding with the first day of the next school year.

The unions, who have already scheduled meetings with the new minister in the coming days, urge the new head of education, Anna Simó, to listen to reverse cuts.

The threat of a strike has been hanging over statements made by various union representatives for days.

Last year, the then-councilor for education, Josep Gonzàlez-Cambray, signed a last-minute deal with the unions to avoid two days of strike action on the first days of the school year.

This came after thousands of teachers and students took part numerous days of industrial action in May 2022 to call for a reversal of cuts and against changes to the curriculum.
