Girona to remove 112 Franco-era plaques around the city
Mayor highlights will to create public spaces "free of hate messages" and "fascist symbols"
Girona will remove the 112 Franco-era plaques that are still on facades all over the city.
The city council will contact all owners of the properties and buildings to remind them that, in compliance with the Historical Memory Act, all symbols that are "explicitly Falangist" must be removed.
If owners don't voluntarily remove the plaques themselves, the city council has already announced that it will directly act.
"Francoist symbolism has no place in an open city committed to the values of democracy and republicanism such as Girona," mayor Lluc Salellas said.
The far-left CUP politician added that the council wants to "guarantee a public space free of hate messages" and "fascist symbols."
