The Red-Green Alliance Danish party asked the government in Copenhagen to urge Spain to open a dialogue with Catalonia over the referendum. “I will call our foreign minister to act because action is needed,” said Danish member of parliament Nikolaj Villumsen. “This is not only an issue between Catalonia and Spain, it is an issue for the whole of Europe,” he added in a statement to the press. The Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, is in Copenhagen on an official visit. He held some meetings with MPs this morning.

“The [Danish] parliament has come out with a clear majority, a clear message, calling for democratic dialogue, and that majority should be respected by our government and pursued by our foreign minister,” said Villumsen, one of the promoters of a debate on Catalonia’s self-determination in the Folketing, the Danish Parliament, in 2015. The outcome was the passing of a proposal requesting that Spain and Catalonia establish “a peaceful and democratic dialogue” on self-determination and “the issue of Catalonia’s independence.”
