A civic organization opposed to independence has asked the parties in favor of a Catalan republic to “step aside” and allow a government of national unity that can represent “everyone.” In a news conference, the head of Societat Civil Catalana (SCC), José Rosiñol, called for a government “once and for all,” although he did not say who should head the executive.

Rosiñol also warned of new protests should the pro-independence parties insist on appointing Carles Puigdemont, or a similar candidate, as president. According to the SCC head, nominating Puigdemont as president of the Catalan government is a “mockery of democracy,” and he accused him of being the president who “has contributed most to social division.”

Catalonia still has no new president or government even though it has been one and a half months since the election was held on December 21, 2017. The unionist Ciutadans came first, with 36 seats, but the pro-independence parties kept the majority in the chamber, with 70 out of the 135 seats.
