Inflation in Spain fell to 2.8% in February, according to preliminary data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) published on Thursday.

If confirmed, it would represent a drop of six tenths of a percentage point compared with January, when inflation stood at 3.4%.

The fall in inflation can be explained by the drop in electricity prices, which increased last February, and the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which remain steady but rose this time last year.

In contrast, fuel prices increased in February, whereas they fell the previous year.

The estimated annual rate of change in core inflation, which excludes unprocessed food and energy products, fell by two-tenths to 3.4%.

The INE will publish the definitive figures for February on March 14.
