The 24 hour wholesale market Mercabarna closed 2017 with record figures of activity, surpassing 2.1 million tonnes of food produce and 8.9 million tones of flowers and plants. This marks an increase of 6.4% compared to the previous year, making it a record year for the hub of wholesalers, according to its president Agustí Colom.

The main reason behind this rise has been a boost in manufactured products as well as the increase in exports. Indeed, 2017 was a record year for Catalan companies selling goods abroad.

Mercabarna made a profit of 6.9 million euros before tax which will be invested in the opening of a new ecological market. Construction will begin toward the  end of this  year.

At the same time, Mercabarna also wants to expand its current installations, and is negotiating to acquire 22 hectars extra in the Zona Franca area of the capital, where it is located.
