Philosopher, theologian and writer Raimon Panikkar dies at 91
Internationally recognised thinker Panikkar was expert in interreligious dialogue. He wrote more than 50 books and 1,500 journalist articles and directed the Fundació Vivàrium Raimon Panikkar. He died in Tavertet, a small village in the Catalan county of Osona, where he was living since 1987 when he came back to Catalonia.

30% of newborns in Catalonia have mothers of a foreign nationality
The Programme for Maternity Health’s birth registry has published data that shows that 30% of newborns in Catalonia have a mother with a foreign nationality. Also, 52% of teen births between 14 and 17 years old were of mothers from a foreign nationality.

The 2 Catalans kidnapped by Al-Qaeda are back to Barcelona
The longest kidnapping by Al-Qaeda in the Maghreb and the Sahel has now ended after 268 days. The 2 men arrived last night at Barcelona from Burkina Faso, where they took a plane after a long journey by car and helicopter across Mali, where they were kept. They were kidnapped in Mauritania last November when they were travelling with a cooperation aid convoy heading to Senegal and The Gambia. The freeing operation has been very complex and there are unconfirmed rumours of a ransom payment.
Mango opens 77 stores in the U.S.
The Catalan clothing company Mango collaborates with United States’ department store JCPenney. Mango has opened in their malls 77 new shops throughout the U.S. In addition, the Catalan company plans to have 300 stores opened by next April and 600 by Fall 2011.
Catalonia, the European territory that invests the least in education
According to date from the General Workers’ Union, Catalonia invested only 3.6% of its GDP to education in 2007, putting the territory behind less developed countries such as Romania and Bulgaria. Also, the number of Catalan students dropping out of university is double than the EU average.
Pyrenair to offer direct flights to Vigo, Madrid and Lisbon from Lleida-Alguaire
The Aragonese airline company Pyrenair will begin offering flights from the Lleida-Alguaire airport starting in January to destinations such as Vigo, Madrid, and Lisbon. Pyrenair will also operate from the Osca-Pirineus Airport.
