It's finally time to play that game in hand, which offers the chance to move six points clear at the top of the Liga table. FC Barcelona travel to Gijón to play the game originally postponed due to their participation at the Club World Cup in Japan. It’s now thirty games that Barça have strung together without losing, the longest unbeaten run in the history of Spanish football. We need to go all the way back to October 1994 to find the last case of a Sporting victory over Barça. Gijón is the town where Barça’s coach Luis Enrique grew up and Sporting is a club that shall forever be close to his heart. “Whenever I go back to El Molinón, it's special” he said on Tuesday. “But tomorrow I'm going back as a coach and I want to win” he stated. The Barça boss and Sporting’s coach, Abelardo Fernández have known each other since school, and the latter also spent part of his playing career at FC Barcelona.

The Spanish Constitutional Court (TC) has accepted the appeal presented by the Spanish executive to suspend the new Catalan Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Thus, the department lead by pro-independence cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’ top member, Raül Romeva will be suspended at first for five months, which is the period that the TC has to study whether the new Ministry is in line with the Spanish Constitution. Earlier this month, the current Spanish vice president, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, and current Spanish Minister for Justice, Rafael Catalá claimed that the Catalan government had exceeded the competences in matters of foreign action specified in the Catalan Statute of Autonomy. For his part, the Catalan President Carles Puigdemont assured that Catalonia “will continue to do foreign action”and defended the legitimacy of the new department. 

The Catalan government has decided to recognise Muriel Casals, one of the Catalan pro-independence movement’s central figures, who died last Sunday, with the Gold Medal of the Generalitat. The award is the highest prize given to those individuals or institutions whose work in the political, social, economic, cultural or scientific field has been outstanding. President of the civil society association Òmnium Cultural between 2010 and 2015, Casals was responsible for the massive pro-independence rallies which have taken to the streets of Barcelona for the past six years. In 2015, she joined pro-independence cross-party list 'Junts Pel Sí' and ran for the 27-S Catalan Elections. Recently, she was named president of the Study Committee for the Constitutive Process, responsible for setting the basis for Catalonia's roadmap towards independence.

The first European date on ‘The River Tour 2016’ will be in Barcelona. The Boss will visit the Catalan capital on the 14^th of May to commemorate the 35^th anniversary of the release of his album ‘The River’ with a concert at Camp Nou. ‘The River Tour 2016’ started in Pittsburgh on the 16^th of January and The Boss performed the whole album, one of his most iconic works. Together with the E Street Band, Springsteen will offer two other shows in Spain; one in San Sebastian and the other in Madrid. Tickets for the Barcelona show will go on sale on the 1^st of March, with prices ranging from 80 euros to 115 euros for reserved seats. The last time The Boss visited Barcelona was in 2012, when he offered a double show during ‘The Wrecking ball’ tour.

Alternative left ‘Podemos’ have insisted that any agreement with the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) will depend on accommodation of their proposal to hold a referendum “with guarantees” and with “a single, clear question” in Catalonia. Podemos’ leader, Pablo Iglesias, emphasised his party’s will to “reform the territorial model” in Spain and recognise the different “national realities”. However, PSOE’s spokesman in the Spanish Parliament, Antonio Hernando, has closed the door on Podemos’ proposal. “We will say no to this referendum” he stated and assured that Iglesias “doesn’t know where he stands”. The Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) have lauded PSOE’s response, with their spokeswoman, Esther Niubó, adding that Podemos’ conditions “are not helping” to form a new government in Spain.  

Pro-independence cross-party list 'Junts Pel Sí' MP Muriel Casals died this Sunday at the age of 70. Former president of civil society association Òmnium Cultural, Muriel was one of the greatest exponents of the pro-independence movement in Catalonia. Recently, she was named president of the Study Committee for the Constitutive Process, responsible for setting the basis for Catalonia's roadmap towards independence. Together with Carme Forcadell, Parliament's President and former president of pro-independence grassroots organisation Catalan National Assembly, Muriel was responsible for the massive pro-independence rallies which have taken to the streets of Barcelona for the past six years. Casals had been in hospital since the 30^th of January, after being hit by a bicycle in Barcelona. She failed to recover from a traumatic brain injury.

Almost two months after the 20-D Spanish Elections, current Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, and Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) leader, Pedro Sánchez, have met. After the encounter, which lasted less than half an hour, Rajoy announced that he may still put himself forward for investiture. “The most reasonable thing, in democratic terms, would be a government led by the People’s Party” he stated and added that PP won the 20-D elections and obtained “more than one million votes more” than PSOE. Regarding the approach towards Catalonia’s push for independence, Rajoy said they hadn’t talked about it but emphasised the commitment of both leaders to “complying with the Spanish Constitution”. Rajoy also referred to Catalan President Carles Puigdemont’s statement to Barcelona’s diplomats, considering it “lamentable and unconstitutional” to have told the consuls that “Catalonia walks towards independence”.

The negative inflation rate in January has been accentuated by a drop in housing prices (-4.8%) mainly due to the decrease in electricity prices, according to figures released by the Spanish Statistics Institute. The January sales have also affected the so-called Consumer Price Index (IPC). On the other hand, the price of transportation grew from -2.7% in December to -1.7% this past January, due to the increase in fuel prices. Thus, the annual variation in Catalonia leaves annual inflation for last month flat. In the whole of Spain, the drop was even more accentuated; prices decreased by 0.3% last month in comparison to January 2015. 

Barcelona’s El Prat airport can now be reached by metro from the city centre. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has finally opened L9 Sud, a driverless 20-kilometre stretch which connects the city centre with El Prat’s Terminal 1. The project, which was originally set to be completed by 2008, has been awaited with much anticipation, especially by those living on the outskirts of Barcelona or in areas without a metro connection, and is expected to transport nearl 30 million passengers per year. The project itself was initially estimated to cost roughly €3 million, but the Catalan government invested 200 additional million on top of the original budget. Despite these changes, L9 Sud will provide passengers a new, more convenient route to El Prat Airport as opposed to the current Rodalies line. Additionally, it will connect to 15 new stations and three other metro lines.

Just 35 kilometres southwest of Barcelona, Sitges draws in tourists every year for its nightlife, beaches, and also for its Carnival celebrations. Starting a week before Ash Wednesday, the city’s streets fill with tourists from all over as well as many commuting in from Barcelona by bus or train. This year, festivities began on the 30^th of January and lasted well into Ash Wednesday on the 10^th of February. Much like celebrations for Mardi Gras, Carnival marks the days leading up to the Lenten season with traditional music, games and royalty. Most of all, tourists arrive to watch a fleet of flashy parade floats and various dance and musical performances in the celebration’s traditional parades or ‘ruas.’ To add to the overall pageantry, groups of participants come dressed in anything from feathered masks to full-on costumes. 

From the 25^th to the 29^th of February, the 5^th edition of the Figueres International Circus Festival will host 24 acts which have never before been seen in Europe.Amongst them stand out Pyongyang’s National Circus, which will leave North Korea for the first time ever, and two shows from Chinese companies which received awards at the WuQiao Festival. 17 different circus disciplines from 13 different countries will be presented at the festival, which this year opens a new tent with capacity for more than 30,000 spectators.Besides becoming the circus world capital for five days, Figueres, a city near the Costa Brava and the French border, plans to become the Word Circus Capital by 2018. 

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont warned diplomats stationed in the Catalan capital that they “will be busy in the coming months” even more than usual, since Catalonia “is walking towards independence”. Puigdemont made this statement during the traditional reception of the Barcelona-based consuls, together with the Catalan Minister for Foreign Affairs, Raül Romeva, and Catalan Minister for Business and Knowledge, Jordi Baiget. The Catalan President also asked the diplomatic community “to explain [Catalonia’s process] properly” to their countries and assured that he is at their disposal to address any concerns they may have. In the same vein, Romeva called on those present to find a “suitable framework” to deal with all their possible doubts in an in-depth manner. 

“Defending national unity” is one of the key points that current Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy established in the People’s Party (PP) proposal for reaching agreements in order to form a stable government in Spain. A national unity “which is threatened”, according to Rajoy. Besides fighting Catalonia’s push for independence, Rajoy’s proposal also includes fighting towards economic recovery, strengthening the basis of the welfare state, fighting against terrorism and reinforcing the democratic bond between citizens and politicians. PP’s leader handed over the document to anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans leader Albert Rivera, with whom he held a meeting today. The proposal has also been sent to Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) leader Pedro Sánchez, who is currently attempting to form government. 

FC Barcelona stretch their unbeaten run to an amazing 29 games on their way to a sixth Copa del Rey Final in eight years. With a seven-goal head start, the Catalans were effectively  through to final before a ball had been kicked at Mestalla, so it was little surprise that Luis Enrique opted to rest players for more decisive matches, including all three of the famous trident. Barça provided most of the early football, with Munirand Rakitic coming closest to scoring, but at the 39th minute Valencia player Negredo was put through one-on-one with Ter Stegen. Douglas,Cámara and Kaptoum were involved in Barça’s equaliser after 84 minutes, the Cameroonian converting Cámara’s cross with practically his first touch of the ball. The goal meant meant that they have now gone for a staggering 29 official matches without defeat, an all-time record in Spanish football.

With a huge advantage in hand (7-0), Barça are hoping to secure a new club record along with booking their place in the Copa del Rey final. The seven-goal lead from the first-leg has allowed the manager to make a few changes, as several youngsters from Barça B and one from the Under-19 team, who had been training with the first team this week, were included in the 18-man squad announced by the coaching staff on Wednesday morning. Barça’s coach, Luis Enrique admits that Wednesday’s game is “a bit strange after the result of the first leg” but is adamant that the team will, as ever, “play to win”.  Regarding the much talked-about chance to surpass Pep Guardiola’s 28-match unbeaten streak, the Asturian said: “Numbers are great as long as they help us towards titles”.
