Barcelona's Miró Foundation to hold an exhibition focusing on the horizon as a recurring theme in modern art

The Joan Miró Foundation, located in the Catalan capital, is to hold an exhibition in the 2013-14 season that will focus on the horizon as a concept in modern painting. Works on show will explore the development of the horizon in art from the 19th century to the present day. Among the temporary exhibitions that take place during next season, the museum will also show a selection of prints and lithographs from Joan Miró himself that will examine the experimentalism of the internationally renowned Catalan artist between the 1930s and 1960s. Barcelona (ACN).- During the coming months, Barcelona’s Joan Miró foundation will hold an exhibition which focuses on how modern artists have used the horizon in their works. The modern art museum presented this week its programme for the 2013-14 season. One display will highlight the power of the horizon in art, analyse its dual nature and explore its role in representing history and culture. It will examine how prominent artists have used the horizon in their work and how it has been an ongoing theme in painting from the 19th century to the present day. This exhibit will contain pieces from artists including: Arnold Böcklin, Claude Monet, David Hockney, Antoni Tàpies, Joan Miró, Perejaume and Magritte. Among the temporary exhibitions that will take place in the next season, the museum will also show a selection of lithographs and prints from Miró himself that will examine the experimentalism of the internationally renowned Catalan artist between the 1930s and 1960s. The Joan Miró 2013 prize winning American artist, Roni Horn, will start the series of temporary exhibitions.

The main temporary exhibition of the Joan Miró Foundation will focus on the horizon as a recurrent element in modern art. The museum’s project director, Martina Millà, will be the exhibition curator, which has been named ‘Davant l'horitzó’ (Before the horizon). Sculptors, photographs and paintings will all be exhibited, ranging from Romanticism, Impressionism and finally present day pieces. The display aims to illustrate the importance of the horizon and how it has been used to represent history and culture.

The Miró Foundation promotes emerging artists

The Miró Foundation was established in 1975 to honour Catalan artist Joan Miró and has since housed much of his works. A temporary exhibition will be organised displaying the work of the so-called ‘Espai 13’, which is a part of the museum that has been dedicated for the past 35 years to exhibiting the emerging art of young experimental artists. The foundation will spend the coming season illustrating its history and showing the art developed in its facilities during this period.
