There are more than your fair share of festivals in Catalonia – some, even perfect for those who’d like to take advantage of the summer to get out of the city. Held in northern Catalonia, by the French-Catalan border, the Clownia Festival is one such event.

From June 28 until July 1, the event will take place in Sant Joan de les Abadesses, and tickets are already on sale. This is also a festival put on by musicians – it’s promoted by local fun-in-the-sun band Txarango. Today, the lineup was released for 2018, and it promises to be the “most international and ambitious” edition of the event for its fifth year, as Txarango themselves explained.

An international and diverse lineup

The lineup includes worldwide names like Australian ska band Cat Empire, alongside Els Catarres, Roba Estesa and l’Orquestra Di-Versiones, among others. Other artists were already announced last week, like Colombian group Doctor Krápula, German musicians Bukahara, and local Lleida artists Koers. There will also be prominent feminine voices, such as Amparo Sánchez (Amparanoia), and Marinah (Marina Abad, who is pursuing a solo project after leaving the band Ojos de Brujo).

But that’s not all. True to its name, Clownia also has circus acts, including the Gran Cabaret Clownia with Guillem Albà & La Marabunta. Also performing will be Ivan Prado de Pallassos en Rebeldía, and El Pot Petit with the acrobatic stylings of Pam i Peu.

Valtonyc to perform as well

Another artist on the lineup that has made headlines recently is Mallorcan rapper Valtonyc. Josep Miquel Arenas Beltrán was in fact recently sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the Spanish courts, accused of glorifying terrorism, slander, and defamation of the crown in his song lyrics.
