Passenger numbers increase in all Catalan airports in March

Nearly 4 million people used country's aviation facilities last month

Passenger numbers increased in Catalonia’s three main airports throughout the month of March, compared to the same period in 2017. Nearly four million people travelled through the installations, the majority of whom using Barcelona El Prat airport, the country’s main hub for international travel, which saw an increase of passengers of 10.6%. Just over 3.8 million people passed through the capital’s airport, according to data released by Aena. 

A total of 72,884 people used the country’s second biggest airport, Girona, marking an increase of 14.2%. The biggest rise was seen in Catalonia’s smallest airport, however. At Reus, the number of people using the airport in March compared to the previous year increased by 41.%, making up for 7.4% decrease in February. Just over 16,000 people used the south Catalan airport in March this year, compared to the 6,776 people flying to and from there in February.

Barcelona airport: exponential growth

Passenger traffic at Barcelona airport has been steadily on the increase since 2009, when 27.3 million people used the facility. The airport closed 2017 with a record number of 47.2 million people having used it, an increase of 7.1% from the previous year.
