Barcelona (CNA).- Barcelona’s airport has passed from around 1,000,000 passengers from intercontinental flights in 2005 to 1,700,000 in 2009. In 2008, the airport reached almost 2,000,000 intercontinental passengers, but the economic crisis had its effects.

The Catalan Government’s secretary for Mobility, Manel Nadal, explained that during the period between 2005 and 2009, “the number of frequencies of intercontinental flights doubled, as well as the number of destinations and their weight in El Prat’s overall number of flights”. These figures come from a study made by the Air Route Development Committee (CDRA). The North-American and African markets are those getting 70% of intercontinental passengers. The offer will be increased with the arrival of Qatar Airways and Air Canada this summer.
